September 5th is recognized as the International Day of Charity. The objective of this day is to encourage people all around the world to provide help to others through volunteering and fundraising. This date was chosen to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work fighting poverty.
The renowned missionary began devoting herself to service in 1928 after travelling to India. She founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta in 1950. Her order became known for its work among those in need in that city. She spent 45 years expanding the Missionaries of Charity to other countries, helping those most in need.
To recognize the work charities do in leading the charge on humanitarian crises, the United Nations designated September 5th as the International Day of Charity in 2013.
Interested in getting involved to celebrate this day? Consider these ways:
- Donate money to charity. Your money allows the charity of your choice to make progress towards their goals. You can feel good knowing your money was well spent; just be sure to thoroughly research any organization you consider donating to!
- Volunteer. Volunteering to help these charities is a very valuable and rewarding way to spend your free time. There is a myriad of different activities you can donate your time to, like cleaning up a natural area for example. This is a great alternative if you are unable to donate money!
- Find a charity event to attend. There are charity events happening all throughout the year, and this is especially true on International Day of Charity. Find an event that interests you and try to support it.
International Day of Charity is a very important day to recognize, as it reminds us to give back to those who need it more. Many people live their lives and only focus on their own issues, when there are many larger issues out there that affect us all. This day refocuses our attention on how to improve the world for everyone. We encourage you to take this time to find a cause you believe in and get involved!
